Peter Obi, has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of deepening poverty across Nigeria despite rolling out several economic reforms. His statement came in response to the World Bank’s latest report released on October 8, 2025, which revealed that 139 million Nigerians now live below the poverty line, an alarming rise from 87 million in 2023.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Obi described the data as a painful reminder of failed leadership and misplaced priorities. He said the sharp increase in poverty under the APC-led government clearly showed that its policies were not benefiting ordinary Nigerians.
According to him, “In just two years under the APC administration, over 50 million Nigerians have fallen into poverty. This is a heartbreaking reflection of how our nation continues to fail its people.”
Obi faulted the government for reacting defensively to the World Bank report instead of tackling the hardship that millions of Nigerians are facing daily.
He argued that despite the “praised reforms,” poverty levels have worsened due to the absence of a solid economic strategy and the government’s neglect of key productive sectors like agriculture, small businesses, education, and healthcare.
“The reason these reforms are failing,” Obi noted, “is the lack of a coordinated plan and the government’s inability to channel economic gains into productive areas that genuinely uplift citizens.”
He urged the administration to pursue meaningful, people centered reforms that prioritize production over consumption, empower local enterprises, and ensure that public spending directly improves citizens’ living standards.
